Memorials of Healing
To create these pieces I conducted research into cultures who have experienced genocide to learn more about their history, culture, and medicinal practice. Rather than focusing on statistics of those affected and the gravity of the acts committed against them, in these pieces I focused on healing and knowledge. Instead of invoking guilt, they are meant to celebrate and cherish the wisdom amassed by these peoples. As a whole they are meant to question the necessity of the frequent practice of genocide throughout human history. In addition to the embroidery, each piece is accompanied by an artist book of my notes from the research.
